83: The 'Mindfulness' Bug.

Master Ungan Donjo in the Tan district was sweeping the ground one day.

Master Dogo Enchi said: You are very diligent in your work.

Master Ungan said: There is someone who is not diligent.

Master Dogo said: If that is true, you must have a second moon.

Then Master Ungan stood up his broom and said: How many moons are here?

Master Dogo left without saying anything.

Master Ungan didn't seem to feel as if he was being particularly 'diligent', he was just sweeping.

Master Dogo seems to have brought an idealistic view of what constitutes 'diligent sweeping': A second moon refers to split consciousness, or self consciously doing something.

If Master Ungan was indeed just sweeping, then who made the 'second moon'?

Trying to get or maintain 'mindfulness' of our activities may represent just a different brand of self consciousness. Just sweeping up may be to sweep self consciousness to the wind and bask in the glow of the shining of every moon.

More could be said though I think: How many moons, how many selves, are here...one, two, many?

Harry.
